Exploring Gut Directed Hypnotherapy in the UK

Unlocking the Power of the Mind

The concept of gut directed hypnotherapy has gained significant attention in the field of holistic healing and wellness. This groundbreaking approach aims to tap into the untapped potential within our minds, harnessing its power to positively impact our gastrointestinal health. The human mind’s potential to influence our daily lives, emotions, and even physical health remains an intriguing area for exploration. Gut-directed hypnotherapy (GDH) has gained significant attention in the United Kingdom. For years I have been working with people experiencing conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, and other functional gastrointestinal disorders for years with encouraging results.  Grounded in research demonstrating links between stress and gut functioning, GDH aims to address IBS symptoms through mental reconditioning strategies designed to alleviate distress signals sent from the brain to the bowels.

As a Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy (QCH) Therapist I work with individuals holistically, meaning that your presentations of symptoms will be unique to you, and so the treatment offered.

The Science Behind Gut Directed Hypnotherapy: Understanding the Mind-Gut Connection

A Complex Relationship

The mind and gut have a complex relationship, with emerging scientific evidence pointing to a strong connection between the two. Research has shown that the brain and gastrointestinal system communicate bidirectionally through neural pathways, hormones, and immune molecules, which we call the brain-gut axis. This means that what happens in one affects the other.

Harnessing the Power of Hypnosis

Gut directed hypnotherapy aims to utilize this axis to treat the miscommunication which can be the cause of various gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and ulcerative colitis. By harnessing the power of hypnosis, I can influence and reprogram patients’ gut-related responses, leading to symptom relief and improved quality of life.

Changing Perceptions, Changing Outcomes

Through guided relaxation techniques and visualization exercises, among other interventions focused on any miscommunication between the brain and the gut; fostering a positive mindset and reducing stress levels, this therapy can positively impact gut motility, sensitivity, inflammation levels, and overall well-being. It offers a holistic approach by targeting not just physical symptoms but also psychological factors that contribute to these conditions.

As a result, the first step in our relationship is understanding the mind-gut connection. By acknowledging this interplay between our thoughts and digestive health, you can see positive results in just a few sessions.

Tapping into the Power of the Subconscious: How Gut Directed Hypnotherapy Works

In my practice, I use a holistic approach, we will work with your subconscious mind to facilitate healing and improve overall well-being. This therapy technique combines elements of hypnosis and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), solution focus therapy among others, to address specific gut-related issues.

During a typical hypnotherapy session, there will be a moment when patients are guided into a state of deep relaxation where their subconscious minds become more receptive to suggestions, with fewer filters. By accessing this deeper level of consciousness, I can help patients reframe negative thought patterns and alleviate their symptoms to treat IBS.

The Role of Visualisation Techniques in Gut Directed Hypnotherapy

Visualisation techniques play a vital role, because our minds react to what we see in our minds in a very similar way to what we see in the world.

Building Awareness Through Mind-Body Connection

Another essential aspect of gut directed hypnotherapy is building awareness through mind-body connection. By developing an understanding between thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, individuals can gain insight into how stress or anxiety affects their digestive health.

The Benefits of Gut Directed Hypnotherapy: How it Can Improve Digestive Health

Hypnotherapy is recognised as one of the most effective forms of therapies, it can be as effective as fodmap for people with IBS. Gut Directed Hypnotherapy is a powerful technique that harnesses the gut and the brain connection to improve digestive health.

Moreover, it provides long-lasting benefits by empowering individuals with self-management tools.

How to go about starting with gut-directed hypnotherapy?

Our first meeting is an initial consultation, I offer a free 30′, no obligation, phone consultation. We will discuss in depth your current symptoms, what you are expecting to achieve, and any relevant history. As your hypnotherapist, we will meet weekly initially, and as symptoms begin to reduce we will meet fortnightly. Whilst this is one of the most effective treatments for symptoms of IBS and most people responded to hypnotherapy in a positive way, there is no guarantee.

During the sessions, there will be hypnotic suggestions used, and you will most likely experience a deep state of relaxation (trance). Rest assure, you have experienced trance states many times before, and we will work on waking you up from some of them. This type of talking therapy also uses cognitive behavioural therapy (known as CBT); after a few sessions you will receive a recording to listen, this is to aid the work we do during the sessions.

A course of gut-directed hypnotherapy can be anything from 4 sessions to 16. Patients with ibs who do not respond to this therapy for help to manage their symptoms after 3 sessions could find relief from ibs symptoms from other forms of therapies. It varies from person to person, and we will discuss your progress during each session.

I only offer one to one hypnotherapy for irritable bowel syndrome, other gut health disorders, stress, anxiety, trauma, confidence issues and depression.

More About IBS Hypnotherapy

In the UK, hypnotherapy is recognised by NICE guidelines as an effective treatment for IBS. This is recommended for IBS patients helping to manage this condition, to reduce IBS symptoms and other gut disorders. Anxiety and stress, as explained in my article about anxiety, stress and the link with stomach pains; is related to an error in the communication between the brain and gut.

Some of the typical symptoms of IBS, which hypnotherapy has been shown to be effective include, but are not limited to: diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pains, acid reflux, and changes in bowel.

People who didn’t respond to pharmacological treatments find it a useful therapy for helping them no only with symptoms like IBS, but also to improve their stress and anxiety levels.

I am a hypnotherapist who is a member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy Professional Association (QCHPA).
